Kids, Cops & Computers Program
We started the Kids Cops & Computers Program over a decade ago to provide access and equity to financially disadvantaged students in Toronto’s 13 priority neighbourhoods. We aim to improve educational outcomes for financially disadvantaged kids in Toronto by providing them with brand-new computers, computer training, Internet safety seminars and “eBuddy” mentoring. To date, we have installed 1,100 brand new computers in students’ homes.
How the Program Works:
Merry Go Round Children’s Foundation works closely with the Toronto District and Toronto Catholic District School Boards to identify high-priority schools. The staff at identified schools then select Grade 7 students to participate in the Kids, Cops & Computers program.
The Program requirements are simple: students must be in grade 7, have no or limited access to a home computer, and must be identified by their teacher as having high learning potential. Once the students are selected and their new computer is installed at home, students meet their police officer “eBuddies.”
eBuddy Mentorship:
Kids, Cops & Computers students who are in Grade 7 participate in monthly lunchtime sessions with Toronto Police Service officers, also known as eBuddies. During these sessions officers and kids engage in discussions about a variety of topics, including: cyberbullying, a day in the life of a police officer and threats to school safety. Kids are also asked to complete two assignments on topics covered at the sessions. This interaction builds friendship, mutual respect and learning opportunities - in both directions. The officers have the opportunity to mentor the kids while demonstrating they are “real” people who happen to wear a uniform and students receive motivational support from their police “eBuddy”.
